Shengteng Zhang

Shengteng Zhang, studied piano from a young age. In 2012, he studied at the Xi’an Conservatory of Music in the composition and music theory department with Professor Liu Zheng and graduated in 2017 with a successful work concert.

In 2019, he began the master’s programme in composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, where he studied with Prof. Brigitta Muntendorf and Prof. Annesley Black. And in February 2022 he gave a successful concert at the Musikhochschule.

In 2023, he began his composition studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin and graduated as a Meister Schüler with Professor Daniel Ott. And Graduated in August 2025 with the highest academic degree in Composition.

His works have been performed by Ensemble Musikfabrik, International Ensemble Modern Akademie, Spółdzielnia Muzyczna Contemporary Ensemble, Homburg symphony orchestral, Ensemble ilinx, Neues Kammerorchester Berlin, Hangzhou symphony orchestral, Xi’an Choir Ensemble and Xi’an Conservatory of Music String Orchestra etc.

Awards and Honors：

•  2024.11 Selected as a global young composer for the 10th anniversary of the “LIMINA Festival” in Salzburg, commissioned to compose the work <Glass Core>, premiered by the renowned Polish ensemble Ensemble Spółdzielnia Muzyczna.

• 2024.05 Work <Mosaiced Stone III> selected for the Berlin University of the Arts festival “Crescendo 2024,” premiered in collaboration with Ensemble ilinx.

• 2023.11 Work for bass and large orchestra <lwl> awarded first prize at the 6th International Homburg Composition Competition in Germany, premiered by the Homburg Symphony Orchestra and broadcast on German radio station SR 2.

• 2023.04 Selected as a global composer for the German new music festival “Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik,” premiered the work <BROKEN MACHINE> with ensemble Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie, broadcast on German radio station WDR 3.

• 2022.12 Large orchestral work <Eighteen Drawings> awarded third prize in the “Yichuang Award” International Composition Competition at the 3rd Hangzhou Contemporary Music Festival, premiered by the Hangzhou Symphony Orchestra.

• 2022.01 Awarded the “Auf geht’s” Artist Scholarship by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

• 2016.06 Vocal work <Little Flowers in the Boundary Stone> awarded first prize in the “Music and Chang’an” Composition Competition at the Xi’an Conservatory of Music.

• 2015.11 Chamber work for Chinese instruments <永> awarded an Excellence Award in the 3rd “Voice of China” Composition Competition at the China Conservatory of Music.

• 2014.06 Vocal work <点绛唇> awarded third prize in the 2nd ASEAN Music Festival Composition Competition.

• 2013.11 Solo piano work <Essay> awarded second prize in the “Music and Chang’an” Composition Competition at the Xi’an Conservatory of Music.

Projects and Artistic Activities：

• 2025.12 Special guest participant in the Composition Teaching Practice Concert at the Xi’an Conservatory of Music, creating and premiering the multimedia composition work <城墙声影>（Sound Shadows of the City Wall）

• 2025.09 Invited to give a personal lecture at the Conservatory of Music and Dance, Ningxia University.

• 2025.08 Served as composer and director for the “KALNGZEITORT” project in Berlin, collaborating with the Neues Kammerorchester Berlin (NKB) and premiering the sound installation work <MUISK +×∩ GEDICHT> at the Berlin University of the Arts.

• 2024.08 Participated in a workshop project with the Berlin Musiktheaterwerkstatt, creating and premiering the music theater piece <Among us>.

• 2024.03 Participated in a workshop project with the Berlin Musiktheaterwerkstatt, creating and premiering the music theater piece <Ausstellung>.

• 2022.04 Commissioned to compose the music work <Ich und du> for the cross-media art exhibition “Steinliebe – Lyrikliebe” (Stone Love – Poetry Love) in Düsseldorf, Germany. The work served as a core auditory element at the Heinrich Heine Institute’s inaugural exhibition, presented by cellist Jeanette Gier.

• 2021.10 Participated in the “UNEXPECTED” project at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM), composing original music for a film, premiered at the Trinitatiskirche.

• 2021.06 Created the multimedia composition work <ZOOM> for the “Adventure#6” project, collaborating with the renowned German new music ensemble Ensemble Musikfabrik for its premiere.

• 2020.11 Created the music video work <Haus!> for a project at the Institute for New Music Cologne, premiered in the concert hall of the Cologne University of Music and Dance (HfMT).

• 2020.06 Created the multimedia composition work <WAHRHEIT> for the “Adventure#5” project, collaborating with the renowned German new music ensemble Ensemble Musikfabrik for its premiere.

• 2019.11 Created the installation music work <WAWA> for the Cologne new music project “BLINK,” premiered at the project event.

• 2017.06 Organized and held an entire personal composition concert at the Xi’an Conservatory of Music Concert Hall.
